Biography
The figurative bronze sculptures and mixed media paintings created by Katie Graham reflect her deeply kinesthetic nature which has fueled a passion for the human form from the very beginning.
In addition to decades of self-directed study, Katie Graham acquired several years of formal fine art education at the university level. This included the Chicago Art Institute, the University of North Texas, and the University of Oregon. She has also attended various classes/ workshops over the years at well-regarded institutions such as the Gage Academy of Art where she refined her skills in figurative drawing/sculpture, and the Pratt Fine Arts Center, where she learned how to cast her own bronze sculptures. She has studied with several distinguished artists such as Tip Toland, Bill Evans, John Sisko, and Tuck Langland. And for many years, she had the privilege of being mentored by acclaimed sculptor Sabah Al- Dhaher.
Although she had pursued painting and drawing over the years, it wasn’t until her mid-forties that, “I realized I was spending more and more time building up the volume in my figure drawings.” That’s when Graham reached for clay and her love for sculpture was born. Several years of sculpture classes/workshops, and mentored studying of figurative sculpture followed, leading to a series of emotionally probing works cast in bronze. She reflects, "by being involved in every step of the bronze casting process myself, I have felt part of a tradition that has remained virtually the same for centuries.”
