-The Supreme Court (6-3) granted the federal government emergency request to suspend an injunction that had barred ICE agents from relying on certain profiling factors based on apparent race/ethnicity. Note this decision was made via “shadow docket” rather than a full merit opinion which is a detailed ruling about what is constitutional. (ACLU of S. California, 9/25)
-Human Rights Watch documented extremely harsh, inhumane conditions in 3 Florida immigration detention centers. Specific abuses include overcrowding, people sleeping on concrete floors, denial of basic hygiene and sanitation, freezing “holding cells,” and denial of medication and medical care. The report notes that these conditions violate the U.S. constitutional protections for humane treatment and due process under the 5th, 8th, and 14th Amendments. (Human Rights Watch, 7/25)
