-The U.S. recent expulsions of 3rd country nationals to Eswatini (accepted 160), Rwanda (accepted 250), and S. Sudan have exposed hundreds of people to a risk of arbitrary detention, ill treatment, and refoulement (forcing someone to return to a country where they face persecution, torture, or other serious human rights abuses.) These deals, at least some of which, include U.S. financial assistance to African governments, are part of a U.S. policy approach that violates international human rights laws and is designed to use human suffering as a deterrent to immigration. African advocacy director at Human Rights Watch said, “These agreements make African governments partners in the Trump administration’s horrifying violation of immigrants’ human rights.” (Human Rights Watch, 9/25)
